Socotra is a small archipelago of four islands and islets in the Indian Ocean off the coast of the Horn of Africa and located south of the Arabian Peninsula, belonging to the Republic of Yemen.
The island is globally important for biodiversity conservation because of its exceptionally rich and distinct flora and fauna. A third of Socotra's 825 plant species and 90% of its reptile species do not occur anywhere else in the world. Also, 7 species of birds are endemic. Socotra is of particular importance to the Horn of Africa's biodiversity hotspot and, as one of the most biodiversity rich and distinct islands in the world, has been termed the "Galápagos of the Indian Ocean". The archipelago is a site of global importance for biodiversity and were recognized as a world natural heritage site in july 2008 by UNESCO.
During my stay on the island, I managed to photograph some of the many endemic plants, trees, birds etc. - and its wonderful people as well...
